Local Missions Team

"…for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.”

The Community Ministry team goal is to support organizations in the Durham area that share the Missions and Outreach Program’s objective of assisting people in the Durham area who are in need of food, shelter or other support. This is achieved by establishing relationships with established community organizations to identify partnership opportunities for Congregation members to be directly involved in the community and to provide various means of support from the Congregation to local mission organizations. Below are some of the ways are Local Missions Committee is active.

Durham CROP Walk for Hunger Relief
Each year Congregation members join with hundreds of people of all ages for the Durham CROP Walk for hunger relief. In recent years, Durham CROPWALKERS have raised as much as $200,000, 75% of which is used to fight world hunger and 25% of which is dedicated to local hunger relief efforts. Over the past 20 years, CROP Hunger Walkers have raised more than $270 million.
The 34th Durham CROP Walk is scheduled for March 22, 2009 at 2:30 PM. The walk will start and end at Duke University Chapel. For additional information visit the Durham CROP website at www.durhamcropwalk.org.

Durham Congregations in Action
Durham Congregations in Action (DCIA) is a consortium of 58 Durham congregations whose mission is to organize, implement, and support a number of outreach activities and agencies in Durham. The Missions and Outreach Program provides support and cooperates with DCIA activities.

Local Community Grants
Each year, the Congregation Council and Finance Committee allocate funds to be distributed to service organizations based in the Durham area whose mission is to assist people in need of food, shelter, and support. The Missions and Outreach Community Ministry team is responsible for overseeing the distribution of these funds through a grant process.

As needs are identified throughout the year, the Local Community Ministry group will allocate funds outside the grants application process. Some of the recent organizations who have received grants include:

Durham Urban Ministries
Genesis Home
Society of Saint Andrews
Achievement Academy of Durham
SEEDS
Meals on Wheels
YO: Durham
Durham Crisis Response Center
AIDS Community Resident Association
AGAPE

Share Your Christmas
Each Christmas season, the Community Ministry team partners with Duke Volunteer Services to support the “Share Your Christmas” project. Through Share Your Christmas, Congregation members are given the opportunity to purchase simple Christmas gifts for underprivileged Durham youth who would otherwise go without.

Supplies Drives
The Community Ministry team regularly holds supplies drives before and after the Duke University Chapel Sunday morning service in order to assist Durham organizations in need of basic supplies. Recent supplies drives have benefited the AIDS Community Residence Association, Durham Crisis Response Center, Genesis Home, Meals on Wheels of Durham, and Urban Ministries of Durham, in addition to a Back-to-School Supplies Drive for youth without necessary school supplies.

Urban Ministries Shelter Dinners
Members of the Congregation, with the facilitation of the Community Ministry Team, serve a hot dinner at Urban Ministries of Durham once a month. Dates for the shelter dinners are on the second Sunday of January, March, May, July, September, and November. On the fourth Wednesday of February, April, June, August, October, and December, the Community Ministry Team also serves a hot dinner. Congregation members prepare and donate the main course; additional menu items are purchased in bulk and prepared at the facility. Donations of lasagna and volunteer servers are always needed.
